Cezanne – a painting workshop with artist Kieran Stiles

Cezanne used colour in place of tonal gradations to model three-dimensional space, with brush work that created a mosaic-like effect. Learn how to develop an oil painting from direct observation by using this rhythmic, diagonal brush approach to build up the volume of fruits and objects.

Explore how Cezanne allowed individual patches of paint to float freely, often leaving the ground canvas showing through. This avoided perfectly rendering rigid shapes and instead captured the essence and mass of the subject.

All materials included apart from an A3 canvas or canvas board which you will need to bring.
