Some for the Birds, Some for the Bugs and Some for Us

A thriving and diverse population of insects and animals, big and small is key to the growing of healthy, nutritious (aka tasty) food. Healthy wildlife means healthy plants means healthy people.

In this all-day workshop guests learnt the fundamental benefits of gardening with wildlife while growing food for people. They developed an understanding of why our wild bird, animal and insect friends are not just either pests or a nice aside to have in the garden but are in fact critical, hard-working colleagues who play a vital role in the guarding and growing of nutritious food or are simply a key link in a beneficial creature’s food chain. They learnt the different roles that many creatures play and what they need in turn, to keep them happy all year round, with an emphasis on the winter months. The day entailed a healthy mix of theory, games and investigations, and also some fun, practical work to apply to the learning and to help increase the diversity and vitality of our wild friends, right here in the kitchen garden.

Tea, coffee, snacks and a hearty lunch of soup, bread and kitchen garden salad was enjoyed.
