Sketchbook Studies – a painting workshop with Artist Kieran Stiles

In connection with the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, which features an installation of sixteen new paintings by Barbara Rae.

Acrylic paint and watercolour can look very different according to the surface it is being painted onto.

In this workshop learn how to use gesso primer on paper in a creative way to generate textural contrasts within a composition.

For example, in some areas the use of gesso primer can create interesting granulating effects, while in other parts of the composition, painting directly onto the raw unprimed surface will result in more open, flowing and blended washes.

All materials are included, except for paper, which you will need to bring.

Either an A4/A3 sketchbook containing heavy weight cartridge paper, or loose sheets of A3/A4 heavy weight cartridge or watercolour paper are suitable.
