British Landscapes- a painting workshop with artist Kieran Stiles

4th December - 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm

In connection with ‘British Landscapes’ at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester. (pallant.org.uk)

Ivon Hitchens lived in a woodland near Petworth in Sussex and painted what it was like to feel enveloped by the surrounding trees.

Painting on canvases with an elongated format, he wanted to work in a wide panoramic orientation to align with the natural, lateral vision of the human eye.

He felt that traditional linear or tonal perspective was a ‘fault’, because it created an artificial space, rather than representing the experience of space ‘as seen’, and he believed that the shapes and colours in a painting – as with musical compositions – should evoke memories and experiences.

Learn how to use large flat brushes to create dynamic passages of oil-colour on canvas and explore the influence of Cezanne and Georges Braque on his use of blended swathes of ‘chromatic colour’, simplification of form and negative space within compositions.

All materials included apart from an A2 white gesso primed canvas board, which you will need to bring.

Location: Asthall Manor ballroom.

Workshops are payable in advance and non-refundable or transferable after 7 days before the event.
